The Boiling Frogs Presents Julien Mercille

BFP Podcast Logo

Dr. Julien Mercille discusses the trail of Afghanistan’s drug money, the false impression given by the latest UN report on the effects of Afghanistan's drug production, and the role of other nations and institutions including western banks. He talks about the predominant view of the US and NATO held by the majority in Afghanistan today, his interview with Malalai Joya, Afghanistan's youngest Member of Parliament, who is well known for openly challenging the US, NATO, warlords and the Taliban, the current state of progressive movements in Afghanistan, and more.

Mercile Julien Mercille is a lecturer in US foreign policy at University College Dublin, where he moved after obtaining his PhD from UCLA. He teaches on US history and foreign policy and has published academic articles on Iran, Iraq and the Cold War, and is now researching the “War on Drugs” and Afghanistan. He has also written for various websites and magazines on those topics and others.

Here is our guest Julien Mercille unplugged!

Need more be said? Think 1960’s “war on poverty”, tax rates, birth rates and George HW Bush (Anton Chaitkin’s book and Russ Baker’s research are very “illuminating”).

For example, did you know that Zapata Offshore Oil had offices in Medellin, Colombia (home of the CIA’s little pet, the Medellin cartel), since the 1960/70’s? (see Russ Baker research)

  2. I apologize if some of this is off topic. There was a problem with posting for awhile. “The European Parliament on Thursday strongly rejected a deal that would have allowed U.S. authorities access to European bank transfers — a vote the United States said disrupted an important source of information for anti-terror investigators.” Reading between the lines, it is the Israeli software Promis that was doing the surveillance. Sound familiar? This is not entirely irrelevant to the podcast above, since the World Bank has been implicated in running the heroin industry out of Turkey after it originated in Afghanistan.

This was meant to be on another earlier post, but there is a posting problem there.”On NPR today they were discussing the possible location of the New York trial of Khalid Sheik Mohammed. Within the Obama Administration they were making it out to be a conflict between Eric Holder upholding the Constitution and Rahm Emanuel playing politics. Beneath that all, it appears there are some very competent FBI justice people good at prosecuting terrorists in NYC. I wonder what Peter Lance or others in the know would say about that?”

  3. Perhaps Dr. Mercille should actually go to Afghanistan and do some research. Peter is a fantastic host as always, but Dr. Mercille was very unimpressive. Like another academic featured on BF he has a great ability to cite news articles and other secondary sources, but has little actual insight from primary research.

The book “The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia” was so groundbreaking because Alfred McCoy actually went to Laos to do his research. I suggest Dr. Mercille follow similar suit and actually go to Afghanistan/Pakistan. At the very least perhaps he will then stop using the term “Afghan Progressives” without any sense of irony.

  4. @Simon,

“Reading between the lines, it is the Israeli software Promis that was doing the surveillance.”
Maybe, but probably not since it was overt. Also PROMIS was designed in the 1970’s, technology has changed a lot since then and I imagine PROMIS is outdated. I am sure there is something else similar, and probably even worse. But this sounds government to government sharing they are talking about.

“This is not entirely irrelevant to the podcast above, since the World Bank has been implicated in running the heroin industry out of Turkey after it originated in Afghanistan.”
The World Bank has been implicated by whom? I am not a huge fan of that institution but I have a hard time believing that one.

  5. @Kingfisher – Citing my sources. Yes, I am sure Promis has evolved as have Carnivore & Echelon. That does not detract from Israeli machinations. They benefit from a trade war between the U.S. and Europe. My source on that one was the Solari Report by Catherine Austin Fitts. If you have forgotten about Sibel’s early testimony from ‘Just a Citzen’ you can go back there to refresh your memory regarding the link between Turkey and the World Bank. Further, Robert Zoellick replaced Paul Wolfowitz at the World Bank and along with Jamie Gorelick allowed the 9-11 commission to become a farce. Those most benefiting from 9-11 were the Israeli’s. Under Paul Wolfowitz, Turkey was given protected status rather than become accountable for manufacturing heroin. Also, we thought Semyon Mogilevich had been caught, but apparently he is on the loose again. He is part of the Russian/Israeli Mafiya that distributes the heroin from Turkey.
I originally liked your posts because I too read ‘Three Cups of Tea’ by Greg Mortenson. The thought that occurred to me listening to Julien, which I hope he responds to after reading our post: is there a link between Greg’s efforts and RAWA? Greg spent a large part of his effort in the remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan forming schools for women.

Just started Mortenson’s new book “Stones into Schools”, pretty good so far; that guy is incredible. I’m sure Mortenson was come across RAWA before; though his projects are in the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Pamir ranges and I believe RAWA is in mostly western Afghanistan. Mortenson also has less of a social agenda then RAWA – or at least goes about it indirectly whereas RAWA is more direct and confrontational.

Yeah, the Russians had arrested him on tax evasion (hey it worked on Al Capone), but recently released him. I don’t think they would have extradited him to the US anyway – he has too many powerful friends in the Kremlin.
