Our National Symptoms-Chasing Yoyo Syndrome

…And Corrupt System of No-Checks & Many-Imbalances

yoyoI go on line and check out the major newspaper headlines, and to my delight there is a TSA related headline or two in every one. In the last few days two in every three e-mails I’ve received (and I receive hundreds a day) carry TSA related heads up or action items in their subject lines. The blogosphere has been simmering with the same outrageous issue. Yet the entire thing gives me pause. A long one. The pattern, the order, the intensity, the lingo, the reaction…all remind me of something or some things. It is a bit, maybe more than a bit, like a sense of déjà vu. The feeling that we’ve been here; more than once, actually many times. Make that too many times. I keep thinking of a yoyo. In fact, I can’t get the image of a yoyo out of my head. I am asking myself, and you, the following question: Are we Americans exhibiting yoyo-like and short-lived reactions? In short-lived jerky motions?

Let’s step back for a second and take a look at this consistent pattern:

NSA illegal wiretapping of American citizens is exposed. We, some of us, are outraged. We can’t stop reading about it. We write about, talk about it, and blog about it nonstop. For a while. The media waits a little, then takes the cue, decides to ride the same wave, however selectively and reluctantly. For a while. The Congress follows the fashion. They are into fashion. They wear this particular fashion like a Halloween costume, over the top of their usual long-term clothing, with every intention of shedding it off at the end of the parade, as soon as it is announced out-of-fashion.

Within a few weeks the media goes back to ‘normal,’ and acts as if ‘it’ never happened, or, it happened but no longer carries newsworthiness since ‘it’ has become another ordinary fact of life to live with and forget it is even there. The Congress likes to remain fashionable. When the media stops, the costume is out-of-fashion; to be discarded. Their usual clothing underneath are ‘classics,’ politically that is, the kind that never go out of fashion, politically, that is. So they go back to the good old classics until the next fashion trend breaks in the news. During this phase, we the people gradually stop reading, talking, writing, and blogging about ‘it.’ We are exhausted from over-excitement. Frankly, we are bored with the topic. For weeks we all had run in the same direction; fast and furious. Everyone within our circle had covered the same ‘topic,’ and the topic started getting too familiar, too common, too ordinary, too tedious and too massive to go against. All in a very short time, but nonetheless.

…and this when the next ‘scandalous’ issue hits. Hooray! We have another scandal and another cause; another outrage. Maybe it is torture, and thousands of documented pictures and reports to go along with it; all committed in our name and with our money. Maybe it is the FBI raiding peaceful protestors’ homes for exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights. Maybe it is major intentional falsifications of facts to drag us all into another war, where we spend billions, kill, and get killed for some made-up cause enriching a few cause-makers. Maybe it is the TSA fondling, groping, and pretty much raping we the people on a daily basis for some made-up, perceived secuity.

No matter what the ‘current,’ or, ‘fashionable,’ or ‘newsworthy’ cause, scandal, or issue, we run back and forth like yoyos, run towards the ‘new cause,’ hold on to it for a short-while, repeat the above steps with the media taking up the trend and Congress sporting the fashion, blogs fuming collectively… basically going around the same circle, completing the same short-lived cycle, then eventually we retreat, and after that, another case of major violation or abuse breaks or gains momentum, we run towards it, pose to confront and challenge it, write-talk-blog about it…

You do see the yoyo I am talking about here, don’t you? What happened to our outrage, a handful of posturing lawsuits, and relentless pledges declared in the face of being illegally wiretapped and spied upon? How long has it been since we found out and became outraged, signed on to hundreds of petitions against it, bombarded the ‘fashionable’ representatives with mails-e-mails and calls? How long has it been since we’ve seen it covered in bold by our media? How long has it been since we’ve heard it discussed or even referred to by those elected as ‘an issue’ or ‘problem’? Here is the most important question of all:

How long has it been since we have either acknowledged or consciously thought about the fact that we are actively, unconstitutionally, and belligerently under surveillance by our government and their plentiful contractors and collaborators?

Please don’t take me wrong. I stand by my word in the introduction section of this article. I am truly delighted by what I see in terms of movements in reaction to TSA’s raping of our rights and dignity. It is just that I see this particular abuse-violation as one of many symptoms of our broken system, suspended Constitution, and a corrupt and abusive system of No-Checks & Many-Imbalances. The real diseases are not getting much, if any, attention. And we the people seem to be inflicted by a chronic case of a symptoms-chasing yoyo syndrome. It is way past time to look to curing and rehabilitating ourselves from this freedom-threatening syndrome, and go after the real diseases and causes.

  1. Too true Sibel. We seek band-aid solutions that never delve into the real diseases and causes. I suggest that, having asked myself this question many times, it may be that the toot cause of all of it is safely entrenced deep inside each of us and it is much easier to look outside of ourselves than to look within.

But doing so is very empowering in the long run. One of the best books I have seen on helping us get at our internal trauma, is The Language of Emotions, by Karla McLaren. I am working my way through it now. We are a society geared to keeping our emotions locked down and not understood. Letting them out to teach us is liberating. Real freedom can only come from within – as many have pointed out. If you ever meet a really “free” person you will never forget them. This book opens the door. Especially for those of us enraged at all the trauma being perpetrated in our names. Give it a try. Thanks for your insights Sibel!

  2. Sorry about the typo in the first paragraph. That is “root” cause, not Toot cause. 🙂

  3. I love this article, and I’ve got a few theories myself on this. The paranoid part of me feels it’s just their way of keeping this all going. It’s the great diversionary tactics much like we see with magicians. Look over there while I do this over here sort of thing. Having A.D.D., I know that the more stuff I have going on at any one time, the harder it is for me to focus on one specific thing. Our society is much like that. When we start to feel overwhelmed, we tend to just shut down.

We are ever becoming more and more the people of instant gratification and response. We just don’t tend to stick with things for very long, due to boredom, or something better, greater, or faster coming along. I myself have been guilty of this on numerous occasions and I’m always trying to learn how to not let it happen.

Something I’ve observed is that when a movement like this happens, and then a political figure takes up the cause (Like Ron Paul bringing up the TSA stuff yesterday) and it get’s rejected by the mainstream media and the rest of gov’t, the wind goes out of our sails and we lose faith in the system and return to our drudgery.

And what’s ironic is that yesterday I was thinking much along these same lines. We have so many different web sites providing information about much of the same things. For instance, for those that believe 9/11 was an inside job. There are dozens of web sites committed to that very subject, and it get’s hard for people like myself to discern what is valid and what is not. IMHO it would behoove these “causes” to merge all of their information, leaders, and members in to one site to unify the message and their efforts. Yes, you’d be dealing with a multitude of personalities and such, but it would surely benefit the overall purpose wouldn’t it?

Or maybe I’m just thinking way too hard about all this??? If anyone cares, I can be reached at micwazoo@yahoo.com

  4. @Dennis: Very nicely and sincerely articulated. ‘band-aid solutions’: perfect fit, a perfect analogy.

@micwazoo:” The paranoid part of me feels it’s just their way of keeping this all going”: not really paranoid. The psychological warfare and systematic indoctrination is not limited to our ‘overseas’ targets.

“Or maybe I’m just thinking way too hard about all this?” No. It is called critical thinking. It is what being discouraged in all fronts: media, academia, …

  5. Alvin Toffler predicted in “The Third Wave” that the rate of change in human society would fast outstrip our capacity to both comprehend the implications of that change and take action to restore a balance to our society. Then last night, I was reading THIS article by Henry Giroux:

    http://www.truth-out.org/living-age-imposed-amnesia-the-eclipse-democratic-formative-culture65144

on the rise of historical amnesia and the sacrifice of education, critical thinking and historical context to the new God of the marketplace. I highly suggest you read it to help understand WHY we have this Yo-yo culture you refer to. One of the things I try to do in my writings here is to ALWAYS place the manifestations of oligarchical power WITHIN that historical context. I believe it is both important FOR us and incumbent ON us to offer our OWN narrative to the rise of that power so we may, more effectively, act as counters to it.

So, as an illustration of the historical context of the struggle, I leave you with the Oysterband’s rendition of Leon Rosselson’s “The World Turned Upside Down” about the original Diggers of 17th century England.

  6. Tweet from Ron Paul
    RepRonPaul
Look for me speaking out against TSA on the Neil Cavuto show (Fox News) around 4:20 EST today

  7. Our government no longer seems interested in or capable of responding to the best interests of the people. What they do is claim that these measures are to make us safe, but effectively both the cases cited – warrant-less wire taps and TSA invasion of privacy are nothing more than Big Brother getting more control of the individuals in this country. This is part of the assault on the fourth amendment and each step consolidates the fascist state.

But of course all the democratic institutions are left in place so we can pretend we have a democracy and a constitution.

It’s all very clever. Our rights and constitution are simply ignored as if they are not there. But no one will claim that they have officially be trashed. Heck it’s all there under glass in the Capitol.

  8. These TSA “porno scanners” and “Love Pats” would be scrapped immediately if Sarah Palin would speak out against them! Funny isn’t it that she hasn’t yet, given that’s she’s such a strong supporter of American values /Sarcasm.

–You shall know them by their fruits.

  9. “There’s blood in the streets, it’s up to my ankles”

Sibel, you seem to be (subconciously?) alluding to the disease metaphor I used commenting on your earlier TSA story. Maybe not, but if we continue to wail about the symptoms without cutting out the tumnor I’m afraid we will go on dancing to Yo-yo Ma tunes indefinitely.

  10. The reason we keep yoyoing is because it takes so long to get anything accomplished and we can’t afford to take the time off from work to keep up with things….they know this. It’s part of the plan.

  11. In their book, “Poor People’s Movements: Why they succeed and how they fail,” Frances Piven and Richard Cloward examine the conditions that lead marginalized populations to form a protest movement. Turns out, it’s a more complicated equation than many previously assumed.

Protests are most successful, the authors write, “when the protestors play a central role in the institution, and it is more likely to evoke wider political reverberations when powerful groups have large stakes in the disrupted institution.” However, “these relationships are almost totally ignored in the literature on social movements,” say the authors.

Thus, the passenger screening protests have a good likelihood of success because passengers play a central role in air travel. But, expanding that success will depend on the extent to which external “powerful groups” have something at stake. TSA is an external group with something at stake. But, TSA is only a middleman, under the thumb of more powerful entities who manipulate government and the economy.

One of those powerful entities, the big investment banks, is the target of activists who hope to strip the banks of their power…i.e, money…by encouraging individuals and investment groups to move their money to smaller banks, thus democratizing the power of investments. But, success depends on a high degree of public coopration, as 34% of the country’s assets are held by 1% of the population and that group is least likely to defect from the big banks, a key source of their wealth, unlike the other 99%, for whom wages are provide most of their income. Other activist groups are targeting the financial power of big multinational corporations by encouraging consumers to buy from small and local businesses.

One way or another, it comes down to money and how it is concentrated or distributed.

  12. Sibel—
THE PUBLIC NEEDS LESSONS IN CIVIL DIS-OBEDEDIANCE AT AIRPORTS. Write a column with a simple instructions check list, WAYS TO COMPLETELY MONKEY WRENCH THE SURVEILLENCE SYSTEM WITHOUT LANDING YOURSELF IN A FEDERAL PRISON CAMP FOR 20 YEARS. Example, could I bring trouble upon myself by telling an airport cop, be sure to check my *sshole because their MIGHT be a bomb in there. If it turns out to be a lie?
ONLY THE U.S. PRESIDENTS PLANE IS FULLY PROTECTED. These regulations are phony fear driven PR to effectively manipulate we idiots. Anybody ever hear of shoulder fired weapons? The pilots association and the flight attendants’ only care about their own convenience. And as long as they are paid on payday would be quite happy to fly half empty planes at double the air fare.
Only the public can help themselves, through creative intelligent non cooperation. Rolling back emerging police state tactics are a crucial step for maintaining our remaining freedoms and civil rights, if any. People need to insist that all full body pat downs be performed in public view.

  13. Sorry about the typo in the first sentence. That is “Civil Disobedience”, not CIVIL DIS-OBEDEDIANCE. I need spelling lessons.

  14. You need more than that. After the rudeness of gratuitously mentioning an orifice that none care to hear of, then drop some twisted reference to violence, then you disrespect all pilots and attendents who in my experience have been nothing but courteous and professional in a stressful atmosphere and have nothing to do with TSA…after all that, a waste of your time writng and ours reading, you imply you would be perfectly fine with having your genitals fondled by Bruno, and your wife’s, and your daughter’s………..wait for it………………….as long as everyone gets to watch.

    Please go away.
