Facebook & Google: The New Faces of Big Brother

They call this the information age and Social media has revolutionized the transfer of information worldwide, allowing people to connect instantaneously and share information as its happening. While this appears to be a good thing, and in many instances it is, we must take into account who are the ones that are controlling these platforms, what are their intentions and how much power do these mega corporations really have?

  1. I understand Newsbud. I don’t understand Facebook. Not the hours that people spend on it. It started out as a social hub but now seems to be the way most people get their news? Same with Twitter. It is up to the individual to use it with common sense. This is basically headline scanning and headlines are almost always misleading about the content. Most people don’t bother to backtrack the story to its original source.

I was sent a story about a gay man being thrown off a building in Chechnya. This was doing the rounds of FB, with the implication of blame Putin. I found the original source, a Russian luxury magazine owned by a Russian oligarch. It mentioned the Russian LGBT Network, I researched that to find its ‘Partners’ included Freedom House – hello George Souros, again. Most people have never heard of George Soros and Freedom House sounds friendly so it must all be legit. Pity Putin gave Them a free hit on that issue, it’s a meme they keep rehashing to keep up the hate Putin fervour.

What are their (FB, Google etc) intentions? 1) Corporation – make a lot of money. 2) Military – anything can and has been weaponized, so they would see it as just another propaganda tool with soooo much access to the masses. It seems to be an incredibly efficient distraction/life waster. It used to be just young men spending hours playing computer games. Now people of all ages can log in and tune out for hours.

I don’t use Google for anything personal. Their tailored ads creep me out. And I don’t trust their connection to the US intelligence agencies.

Maybe navigating our way past the creepy spying eyes will make us smarter anyway. The internet is a very good tool, we just have to remind the stalkers who owns it.

  2. Nilam Bhate says:

I think countries or governments should change the classification of companies such as Facebook, YouTube or Google from a private entity to a News Organisation, since Facebook, YouTube and Google are acting as News Media and let the Existing Laws of the respective countries can apply and justly dispense arbitration.
If Facebook, YouTube and Google think they are above the news media classification then they can appeal the courts for a proper classification, but this will give an opportunity for all to weigh in on the subject and as they say truth will prevail.

  3. Important topic, Spiro. Bravo.

It’s important to let people know how central the US government has been in ALL the major Silicon Valley developments. They were all government plants, developed with government funds from the beginning. Google got a blank check from the government to develop their search engine, for example. They are all inextricably interwoven with US intelligence agencies.

None of this is about “what is says on the package”. And yes, “free” services are not free–we are donating ourselves and our data to feed the system.
