  1. Unfortunately, a bill is before the Maine legislative body to mandate meningococcal vaccine for all students between ages 11-20. Maine already requires that all college students get this vaccination. I’m not against vaccines; however, forcing them on students is clearly part of a totalitarian mindset. A very small percentage of people infected with Neisseria meningitidis develop life-threatening sepsis. At all times, at least 10% of the population carry this organism in their nasopharynx and in winter, that percentage rises to upwards of 25% of the population, so you see, it’s actually a commensual. Approx. 500 people per year suffer devastasting injury or death, most likely due to an genetic vulnerability to the organism. Vaccines should ALWAYS be a voluntary option – not something forced against the will. This is America, not some third-world country. I’m a health care worker in Maine and am not required to take the flu vaccine. If and when that day comes, I will glady fight it at all costs.

      Jae,
Thank you for sharing this info with us. Obviously this is an extremely controversial topic and unfortunately it appears people’s well being and best interests may not always be the driving factor behind such mandates. And even if they were, as you said this is America, not Nazi Germany, people should be able to exercise their rights and not have them dictated by others, in my opinion. I would be interested to see the efficacy rate versus the potential risks of the immunization.
