Tear Gas, Guns and Riot Squads: The Police State’s Answer to Free Speech Is Brute Force

Forget everything you’ve ever been taught about free speech in America. It’s all a lie. There can be no free speech for the citizenry when the government speaks in a language of force. What is this language of force? Militarized police. Riot squads. Camouflage gear. Black uniforms. Armored vehicles. Mass arrests. Pepper spray. Tear gas. Batons. Strip searches. Surveillance cameras. Kevlar vests. Drones. Lethal weapons. Less-than-lethal weapons unleashed with deadly force. Rubber bullets. Water cannons. Stun grenades. Arrests of journalists. Crowd control tactics. Intimidation tactics. Brutality. This is not the language of freedom. This is not even the language of law and order. Unfortunately, this is how the government at all levels—federal, state and local—now responds to those who choose to exercise their First Amendment right to peacefully assemble in public and challenge the status quo.

De-Manufacturing Consent- Breadless Circus: World Cup Focalizes Civil Unrest in Brazil

Guillermo Jimenez Presents Ioan Grillo

On this edition of De-Manufacturing Consent Guillermo is joined by Ioan Grillo, a freelance journalist and author of the book El Narco: Inside Mexico's Criminal Insurgency. Today, we focus on South America and the situation in Brazil, as civil unrest, protests, and clashes with police are spurred by the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup. We discuss the allegations of corruption, misallocation of resources and funds, and the disillusionment of the youth throughout Latin America, many of whom are opting to boycott the international soccer tournament and taking to the streets to express their dissent. We go over Brazil's program of "pacification" that began in 2008, in which police forces equipped with tanks and helicopters raid poor neighborhoods, known as favelas, to "cleanse" the city of its criminal elements, while at the same time demolishing buildings, rendering thousands homeless, and killing innocent men, women, and children.

As billions are spent to help "clean up" Brazil's image for the international community, tourists exposed to the reality that many protest organizers have vowed to bring may end up having to close their eyes, cover their ears, and sing along to Shakira's appropriately titled World Cup anthem, "La La La."

The Slow & Painful Death of Outrage in the USA

I have been reading and watching reports on the rallies in Russia in support of protest leader Aleksey Navalny. And I have been comparing these protests and rallies to what we have, or actually what we haven’t, over here in the United States, the supposed land of the free: [Read more...]

Mass Protests, the Legend of King Midas & the Golden Touch

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” - Frederick Douglass

By Richard de Bruin

There are many tales and fairy tales about people being granted wishes by various magical creatures. Made in haste or a fit of greed the wishes consequently and almost every time then backfire on the people who made them. What first seems good fortune usually ends up costing them, sometimes dearly. When I did a little search to find a good example, the sheer number of results pretty much bogged me down. It is a very common theme, an old one too. One of the most well-known from antiquity would be the legend of King Midas and the golden touch. Having everything you touch turn to valuable metal may seem like a smart idea, it makes eating or getting dressed rather problematic. Let alone hug your loved ones. Be careful what you wish for lest it come true is a time-honored and universal folk wisdom. [Read more...]

Washington Is Driving the World to the Final War

“Whether the desire for liberty exists in America remains to be seen.”

“V For Vendetta,” a film that portrays evil in a futuristic England as a proxy for the evil that exists today in America, ends with the defeat of evil. But this is a movie in which the hero has super powers. If you have not seen this film, you should watch it. It might wake you up and give you courage. The excerpts below show that, at least among some filmmakers, the desire for liberty still exists.

Whether the desire for liberty exists in America remains to be seen. If Americans can overcome their gullibility, their lifelong brainwashing, their propensity to believe every lie that “their” government tells them, and if Americans can escape the Matrix in which they live, they can reestablish the morality, justice, peace, freedom, and liberty that “their” government has taken from them. Protesting the Cosmopolitical Corporate Order

EPPFrom the global march against Monsanto to factory workers in Bangladesh, protests against global corporations and the policies put in place by states to protect them are advancing around the world. This episode briefly identifies some of the protests and acts of resistance against the global corporate order, and looks at why this resistance must accelerate: it's only the future of the species which hangs in the balance, so better to try than to say goodbye.

Mr. Draitser talks about the deception of Obama on austerity-selling out his base and all progressives, Romney & Ryan as the bringers of death for many, possible solutions-including his recent activities organizing an anti-austerity movement in New York City, and more!

Empire, Power, and People with Andrew Gavin Marshall- Episode 30

Riots, Rebellion, and the Spanish Miners

EPPIn anti-austerity protests around the world, over the past several years, we often hear of 'riots' breaking out, when bank windows are smashed or rocks are thrown at cops. The violence exists, but the imagery of a 'riot' evokes the notion of drunk youths mindlessly causing havoc and setting things on fire and looting shops. This is not the nature of violence in the battle against austerity. Rather, invoking a term used by Stokely Carmichael when he was describing the urban ghetto riots in the United States in the 1960s, we need to be referring to these incidents as "urban rebllions." As the urban rebellions are taking place all over the world, we are also seeing something new developing in Spain. In the northern mining towns in the regions of Asturia and Leon, the coalminers have gone on strike against the government's plan to cut their subsidy by 63% this year alone. They began blockading streets and railways, and were met by the Guardia Civil (riot police) who brought tear gas and rubber bullets to the mining communities and rural areas. There, the miners have taken to defending themselves with sling-shots and homemade rocket launchers.

We are witnessing a new phase in the anti-austerity rebellion in Europe, and emerging from the very same region and communities in which we witnessed the beginning of the Spanish Civil War back in 1934, where the miners were subsequently crushed by Francisco Franco. History is in the making in Spain, the question is: will we pay any attention?
